This reprint, published in 2024 by Going Against the Tide, features two essays by Kenny Lake on questions of revolutionary strategy and state power. “Malcolm X Didn’t Dish Out Free Bean Pies” was originally published in kites #3 (2021). It exposes the way “mutual aid” has been used to cover charity work in revolutionary posturing, and draws lessons from past revolutionary movements to argue for the pivotal role of agitation and class struggle in the revolutionary process and for treating the masses as the makers of history rather than as grateful receivers of charity. “Revolution Has Vanished” was originally published in kites #5/6 (2022). It takes on “Pac-Man” politics of various stripes that imagine you can eat away at bourgeois state power bite by bite rather than decisively overthrowing it. It critically engages with “Maoist,” anarchist, electoral, and other strains of Pac-Man politics and theoretical rationales for political projects ranging from Cooperation Jackson to Rojava to Venezuelan social movements and governments.
